Theatre company launches season with spooky comedy

With the season of ghosts and ghouls lurking on the horizon, it seems fitting the Battlefords Community Players (BCP) would launch its new season with a play about a poltergeist with a plan.

Written by Phil Olson, the comedy “Mom’s Gift” is about a woman who after being dead for 11 months comes back as a ghost to attend her husband’s birthday party and carry out a plan she needs to execute to earn her wings.

“She has a mission. The problem is we don’t know what the mission is; she doesn’t know what the mission is. The whole thing is a bit of a mystery while they search to find out exactly what it is,” BCP Executive Producer Donna Challis said.

Another twist in the tale, the only person the ghost can be seen by is her daughter, who has been ordered to spend the day with her father as part of her anger management work.

“It’s a cute little play. I was at rehearsals the night before last and it’s coming along very nicely,” Challis said.

The show runs from Oct. 15 to 26 at the BCP Little Theatre in Battleford. People also have the option to take in the show as a dinner-theatre production.

The 2019/2020 BCP roster of entertainment features a variety of productions, from murder-mysteries to dramatic performances.

Among the season’s highlights are the farce “Don’t Dress for Dinner” – an adaptation by Robin Hawdon of “Pyjama Pour Six” by Marc Camoletti. People can also attend the thriller “Picture Perfect” by Gary Earl Ross. The season will wrap up with a comedy-drama called “Impromptu on Nuns’ Island” by Michel Tremblay.

The company is also planning a reading of “A Christmas Carol” closer to Christmas and some murder-mystery shows.

Tickets for all productions are available through BCP.

Challis commended a number of new volunteers who have either joined the cast this year or taken on some behind-the-scenes responsibilities to assist in the production end with the company. She said more volunteers are always welcome.
