City of Melfort, Humboldt Broncos officially unveil new ‘mini-rink’ at Northern Lights Palace

The City of Melfort along with the Humboldt Broncos officially unveiled the new mini-stick rink at the Northern Lights Palace in Melfort on Friday, Oct. 4.

The rink has been operational for a few weeks, but the City thought Friday was a great night to officially open the rink with the Broncos being in town to play the Melfort Mustangs in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League action.

The rink was built with help from the HumboldtStrong Community Foundation who donated $100,000 dollars to the City of Melfort after their help after the Humboldt Broncos bus crash on April 6, 2018. The rink used about $25,000 dollars of the donation.

Melfort City Manager Ryan Danberg said with the rink already being up and active for a little while, the effects are being felt throughout the region, especially Humboldt.

“We were fortunate enough to have [Humboldt’s] Mayor and a couple of Councillors through the building here earlier this week,” Danberg said. “And I suspect that we might see one of these in Humboldt soon because they thought it was a pretty cool concept.”

The other $75,000 or so of the donation is going elsewhere in the community. $25,000 will go towards a Video Laryngoscope in the Melfort Hospital. The rest of the money will go towards building a heliport at the Hospital as well.

“So really, they’ve changed the face of our community in three different areas,” Danberg told northeastNOW.

The Foundation also donated money to a few other local communities including Tisdale and Nipawin. Danberg said it’s great to see the communities work together like this.

“We still think about Humboldt on a daily basis, especially myself being involved with hockey,” he said. “And it’s awesome to see things like this come to fruition.”

The Broncos had a couple of their players out for a photo op and a chance to experience the rink with some local kids.
