Quill Plains Centennial Lodge hoping for approval for renovations

Administrators at the Quill Plains Centennial Lodge in Watson are hoping for some help from the government in improving their facility.

According to Chairperson Norma Weber, there is lots that needs to be done.

“We need to have a 12-bed wing replaced on our lodge,” she said. “It’s over 50 years old, the doorways are narrow, the rooms are very small and worn.”

To replace the wing, Weber said they will move the 12 beds to a new wing before renovating the old one. The renovation would require moving the laundry facilities, expanding the tub room and improving the air exchange throughout the whole facility.

The project is expected to be an expensive one, costing around $8.5 million total. However the lodge would not be expected to pay the whole bill if the project is approved by the provincial government. The lodge would only have to pay 20 per cent of the expansion, or about $2.2 million.

Right now, Weber said they have some commitments from local rural municipalities and municipalities totalling around $800,000. However, that money is in limbo until the project is officially approved.

They’ve also held a few fundraisers so far including ladies’ nights, and a few other smaller upcoming events. Weber said they are looking for any ideas from people to raise funds for the project.

“If we don’t have this long-term care home open here, it will be open somewhere else,” Weber said. “And where would you like to be? Would you like to be further away from your family and friends when you get older and need these facilities? Or would you like to be close to your area where you know people and things like that.”

Weber said if the project gets approved, they would hope that construction would take about two years to complete.
