La Ronge RCMP initiate sudden death investigation after suspected drug overdose

Nov 8, 2019 | 1:45 PM

La Ronge RCMP have initiated a sudden death investigation after a suspected drug overdose.

According to an RCMP media release, on Nov. 8 at approximately 8 a.m., officers responded to a complaint of three adult males in medical distress at a residence on the Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB). The three males were transported by local EMS to hospital in La Ronge where one of the males, a 35-year-old resident of LLRIB, was declared deceased.

Police state while this sudden death investigation is in the preliminary stages, investigators believe this death may be the result of a drug overdose. Investigators also believe the drugs were obtained in the La Ronge area.

RCMP also noted it will take some time to confirm the exact cause of death. Police are working with the Office of the Chief Coroner to determine the cause of death. If this death is determined to be the result of a drug overdose, it will also take some time to confirm the substance responsible.

Public safety is a concern in situations like this, therefore the RCMP would like to warn the public of the dangers of consuming illicit drugs from unregulated sources. Street drugs are often represented as one thing, but can unknowingly contain other substances such as fentanyl and contact should be completely avoided.

If any member of the public has illicit drugs they are concerned may contain fentanyl or carfentanil, they should leave the area and immediately call 911. Do not handle or touch them or bring them to your local RCMP detachment. After calling 911, the appropriate resources will be deployed.

RCMP state getting fentanyl, carfentanil and other illicit opioids off the streets continues to be a top priority. Officers are collaborating with domestic and international law enforcement partners to actively address this issue by pursuing criminal networks fueling this public health threat.
