Stars look to muzzle Terriers on the hunt for 16th straight

Nov 13, 2019 | 2:00 PM

Riding the wave of 15-straight victories, the Battlefords North Stars return to action Wednesday night at the Civic Centre looking to make it 16, as the team will welcome the Yorkton Terriers to town.

The game will offer hockey fans in the Battlefords their first look at the at the home side since the Stars were named the top team in Canada in this week’s Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) weekly rankings.

The showdown will also mark the third game of the season-series between the Stars and Terriers. Tied at a game apiece heading into the third bout, Yorkton’s 6-2 victory over the Battlefords back on Oct. 1 remains the Stars’ lone defeat this season.

The North Stars are 22-1 on the year heading into play. Yorkton meanwhile, sit atop the Viterra Division, having won eight of their last ten in their own right, with a 13-10-1 record through 24 games.

The night’s matchup will feature two of the league’s top three offences facing off, led by a pair of dynamic gamebreakers and premier goal scorers.

Terriers’ captain, Chantz Petruic leads all players in scoring this season, having collected a league-best 24 goals, 48 points through just 24 games.

Making the eye-catching numbers even more impressive, the 20-year-old, Petruic is directly responsible for contributing nearly 30 percent of his team’s total goal production.

While the Stars feature a much deeper offensive attack, one name that stands out as especially dominant for the team of late, has been Quintin Loon-Stewardson.

Loon-Stewardson was recently named SJHL Player of the Week after picking up four goals and a helper in three Battlefords’ victories last week.

Looking back even further, with a staggering seven goals, eleven points over his last six games, the 19-year-old has now registered 17 goals, 29 points through 23 games this year.

Loon-Stewardson has continued to score with aplomb, despite being without his usual running mate and fellow top-line talent, Elijah Loon-Stewardson over the last two games. Elijah, has missed time with an upper body injury and will remain sidelined for the team heading into Wednesday’s contest.

Veteran blue liner, Dylan McCabe will also remain out for the team for the second-straight contest, after suffering an upper body injury of his own, Nov. 8 against Melfort.

In McCabe’s absence, rookie Timon Prexler will fill in alongside defensive stalwart, Noah Form in the Stars’ top four.

Manning the crease, goaltender Parker Rey will get the start for the North Stars Wednesday.

The 19-year-old, Rey has been nothing short of spectacular for the Stars through the first two months of the season, posting a 6-1 record to go along with a minute 1.61 goals-against average and .942 save percentage heading into action.

Wednesday night’s game will be broadcast on 1050 CJNB. The Ultra Print Pregame Show will begin at 7:15 p.m. with puck drop at 7:30 p.m. on NAPA North Stars Hockey.
