Meadow Lake welcomes Giant Tiger

Nov 16, 2019 | 12:52 PM

Mayor Merlin Seymore welcomed Giant Tiger to the citizens of Meadow Lake early this morning.

Seymore spoke before a crowd of approximately 30 people welcoming out of town staff and managers to the community. Giant Tiger issued donations of $500 to both Jubilee and Lakeview elementary schools.

“It’s added opportunity for people to shop. The more opportunity there is, the more different places there are for people in Meadow Lake and Flying Dust and the north and the RM [to shop]. More people will stay in Meadow Lake and spend their dollars here rather than going out of town,” he said. “When people spend their dollars here, there’s going to be more expansion, which is great for the community.”

The brightly lit store had its shelves stocked with everything from clothing to groceries.

“We’re hoping that Meadow Lake keeps growing. I’d like to see more buildings here. I’d rather shop local than drive three hours to Saskatoon and it’s not safe in the winter,” said local resident Nori Gjolena. “I may as well spend that dollar here and stay home.”

Local resident, Kyla Sheppard said the selection of merchandise is similar to Red Apple and Fields, which have been established in the community.

After the store was unveiled, The Flying Dust Drummers engaged in a singing and drum performance while shoppers paused to gather around them.

“That gave me goosebumps,” said one shopper.

Store staff were excited while handing cake and gifts to kids, pets and shoppers. Cashiers stood alert with bright smiles while shoppers lined up with their carts.

Tanessa McCloud-Lambert attends Carpenter high school and was surprised to see the vast selection of merchandise.

“The prices are great and it looks really nice in here. I don’t shop [in Meadow Lake] because usually you can’t find what you’re looking for but I might do my Christmas shopping here,” she said.

The store will be open until 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday during this weekend’s grand opening.

After this weekend, Giant Tiger will be open Monday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m and until 8 p.m on Sunday’s
