Calls for service at fire department up in 2019

Calls for service were up slightly in 2019 for the La Ronge Regional Fire Department.

That’s according to Acting-Fire Chief Keaton Cloud, who stated there were 192 calls in 2019 compared to 186 in 2018. He said there was a small increase in false alarms, as well as structure fires.

“In 2019, we had several specialized training courses brought in by third party companies,” Cloud said. “The training consisted of bus extrications and hazmat operations. We also continue to have huge support from Northern Resource Trucking, who are still providing training to our members with regards to their Class 3A certification. Northern Resource Trucking has donated thousands of dollars towards our training and we are deeply grateful for their support.”

In 2019, the La Ronge Regional Fire Department accepted from La Ronge EMS the donations of a used ambulance. It was converted into a ice and water rescue unit and Cloud noted the department is grateful for the donation and proud to have a strong working relationship with La Ronge EMS.

Also in 2019, the fire department ordered new structural firefighting gear. Cloud said most of the gear was reaching the end of its 10-year lifespan.

“For 2020, we plan to order the rest of our structural firefighting gear,” he said. “We also have several exciting courses planned for our members. 2020 will be a year that we focus on training, community involvement and the hiring of more staff pending budgetary approval.”
