SVORA’s final oval race going down near Codette

It’s the final stop on the Saskatchewan Vintage Oval Racers Alliance’s (SVORA) season.

The Codette Oval Race began into 2013 before it expanded into a provincial circuit.

“We’re on a point system,” SVORA President Shawn Dale said. “Each place you race you collect your points for wins and get to be the points champion at the end of the year. The races at Codette are the final races of the year. It gets down to be everything is on the line for the people in the points run. If you’re behind, it’s your last chance to catch up.”

SVORA has 24 different race classes. Some of the sleds used include 340 fan and 340 free air, and races can vary from three laps to 10.

“You’re seesawing,” Dale said. “In the first lap you could be in last place but by the end you get to the last lap you could be in first. There are usually a lot of lead chances and [racers] are hitting some pretty good speeds.”

The final oval races will be held on a body of water approximately two and a half miles south of Codette on Sunday, Jan. 19 at noon. Dale said an area of the water body will be cleared for vehicles to park as close to the track as they can allow.
