Ice Wolves sitting in fourth place in the SJHL

There’s only a month-and-a-half left in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s regular season.

The La Ronge Ice Wolves are currently fourth in the league with 22 wins, 16 losses and three overtime losses for 49 points. The team is sitting in second place in the Sherwood Division, trailing the Flin Flon Bombers by six points.

“We have 15 games left, and we have an opportunity to gain some ground and control our own destiny and try to win a division title this year,” Ice Wolves Head Coach Kevin Kaminski said. “That’s our goal right now. We have to hit it in full stride when playoffs come around.”

At the Ice Wolves’ most recent game Jan. 11 at La Ronge’s Mel Hegland Uniplex, the squad lost 8-2 against the Nipawin Hawks. Only seconds into the first period, Forward James Philpott made the first goal of the game with assistance by Daylon Manning and Jordan Mish. The second goal came in the third period with nine second left on the clock. Mish made the goal assisted by Jake Gudjonson and Manning.

“I think we got a little bit complacent,” Kaminski said. “We beat them 2-0 a couple weekends before and we thought maybe it would be easy again this weekend. We can’t take a night off. I don’t care who it is. Everybody is good and you have to respect that, and we have to come out hungry and play with desperation.”

The Ice Wolves have two away games coming up including one against the Melfort Mustangs on Jan. 15 and another with the Battlefords North Stars on Jan. 17. The next home game isn’t until Jan. 29 when the Ice Wolves are up against the Weyburn Red Wings.

“Up until last weekend, we were 15-3-3,” Kaminski said. “We played some very good hockey and hopefully we got that little bump in the road out of our system. We’re ready to get back on the winning track and go to Melfort Wednesday and then North Battleford, and get back to playing Wolves hockey and start a new winning streak.”
