Mustangs fall to Ice Wolves in another overtime affair

Feb 6, 2020 | 9:17 AM

Just over a month into 2020, overtime seems to be the kryptonite of the Melfort Mustangs in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.

Through 11 games of 2020, the Mustangs have had five games head to overtime, they’ve lost all of those games including their Wednesday contest against the La Ronge Ice Wolves losing 4-3.

Mustang forward Tian Rask said over the stretch that has seen three of four games go to overtime, they’ve deserved better.

“I think it’s felt that way the last four or five games,” Rask said. “But we’re just going to stick with it, it’s going to come, the hockey gods can’t be like this forever.”

The Ice Wolves had the upper hand in the first period, scoring first as Booker Chacalias scored with five minutes to play in the frame. The Ice Wolves advantage may be due to a large powerplay advantage as they were given five powerplays to the Mustangs zero.

In the second period the Mustangs turned their game around. Although Ben Manson did give the Ice Wolves a two goal lead just 50 seconds in. The hometown Mustangs fired 29 shots towards Ice Wolves goalie Liam McGarva and scored twice. Dylan Ashe had a shot make it’s way through traffic for his second of the season. Then a shorthanded two on one was finished by Colton Schell to tie things 2-2. Daylon Mannon put the Ice Wolves up 3-2 later in the period, but the Mustangs seemed to reclaim the momentum.

Rask would tied it up 12 seconds into the third period, giving those in attendance a tie game for the rest of the third period. Rask said they almost played a complete game on Wednesday night.

“We had a couple mental lapses early in the game,” he said. “We talk about playing a full 60 minutes. We were probably only, five, ten minutes short of that but that’s what kills us. But we’re working on that as a squad and we’ll come out on top in the end here.”

In overtime, each club had their fair share of chances including a couple of Melfort two-on-ones. But with just seconds remaining, Chad McIlwain got just a few inches of space and was able to fire one past goalie Shawn Parkinson to give La Ronge the 4-3 victory, even while being outshot 57-28 over the contest.

Melfort now sits with a 24-15-5-3 record, good for a tie for fifth in the SJHL with 56 points and a weekend road trip to Battlefords and Kindersley upcoming.
