Three in a row

Bosch’s hat-trick brings Mustangs to third straight win

Feb 19, 2020 | 10:24 AM

The Melfort Mustangs got their third win in a row on Tuesday, Feb. 18 in emphatic fashion as they downed the Estevan Bruins 9-2 in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) action.

From puck drop, Melfort seemed to have control, and did not let go. Kyle Bosch scored his first goal of the night just over two minutes into the game on a powerplay, and Seth McCulloch made it 2-0 not even halfway through the frame. Estevan got one back late as Tanner Manz scored with less than a minute to go, but that’s pretty much as close as Estevan would get in the contest.

Christian Albertson’s ninth of the season, and Bosch’s second of the night made it 4-1 after two periods, and Melfort started to pull away, but not without some beaten and battered players. Austin Nault left for some facial repairs, but did return, and a couple of Mustangs got caught blocking shots, but that didn’t seem to stop Melfort.

Bosch got his hat-trick just 23 seconds into the third to make it 5-1 as Melfort continued the enslaught. Bosch said after a few good games with his linemates Kenzie Arnold and Tian Rask, it was a perfect storm on this night.

“Tonight it all just came together,” he said. “And the whole team was going, I think we had contributions from all four lines which is nice.”

Adam Nobes, Tyson Meyers, Colton Schell, and Arnold all joined the scoring party to extend things to 9-1, and put more salt in the wound. Brady Nicholas got one for Estevan late to make it 9-2, but it was almost meaningless as the Mustangs controlled things the rest of the way and held on for their third win in a row. Over their three game win streak, the Mustangs have only allowed five goals, and Bosch said they are all committing defensively.

“The boys are just buying into our [defensive] zone, not cheating for offence, you work on your [defensive] zone, get the pucks out,” Bosch told northeastNOW. “And it’ll all come together like it did tonight.”

Melfort continues their five game homestand with the concluding two games of it on Feb. 21 and 22 as they host Notre Dame and Weyburn. The Mustangs are 27-16-6-3 on the year, good for 63 points in the SJHL standings.
