Rancier robs Mustangs in Game one against Bruins

Mar 7, 2020 | 9:05 AM

The Melfort Mustangs did almost everything they could on Friday to beat Estevan Bruin goalie Keenan Rancier, but they only managed to get one of 45 shots by him. As a result, the Mustangs fell 4-1 in game one of their Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) quarter-final series.

Mustangs Assistant Coach Trevor Logan said while they fired an abundance of shots on goal, they need to help themselves a bit more.

“Just couldn’t get anything to go,” he told northeastNOW. “Rancier was playing really well. I thought that maybe we didn’t attack the net enough to pick up the rebounds that were maybe there and maybe get a few more screens, if he sees it, he’s probably stopping it.”

Melfort fired 18 shots towards Rancier in the first period, but the 2000-born netminder was making save after save to keep things dead locked. That was until a three on two into the Mustangs zone halfway through the period allowed Griffin Asham-Moroz to fire a wrist shot by Mustang goalie Shawn Parkinson to make it 1-0. Melfort continued to put pressure on but could not find success.

The hometown Mustangs would fire another 16 shots towards Rancier in the second period compared to the Bruins six, but neither team added a goal to their total.

The third period saw Estevan get the jump early, but Melfort would push back, but to no avail. Troy Hamilton tipped a Kade McMillen shot on a four minute powerplay seven minutes into the period to make it 2-0, but Christian Albertson brought Melfort back to within one scoring on a shorthanded breakaway less than a minute later. After that goal, it felt as though Melfort may have had the edge, but they couldn’t beat Rancier again. Another Troy Hamilton goal made it 3-1 with just over five to play, while Cody Davis scored into the empty net with 17 seconds left to make it 4-1.

Logan said they aren’t going to let this loss drag them down.

“This is a long series,” Logan said. “It’s a marathon, it’s not a one game series it’s seven. We’ll just keep pounding away, I’m still confident in our group.”

Game two of the best-of-seven goes on Saturday, back in Melfort at the Northern Lights Palace.
