An innovative hockey-based program coming to Carlton Comprehensive High School this fall is on display for the public this week.

Mark Maloney and Dustin Taylor of Global Sport Academy are in Prince Albert for a number of meetings including a pair of public information sessions at Carlton this week.

“There are amazing people in this community, and there was certainly a need and an appetite to integrate high-performance sport passion and tie it into academics, and build a program that would allow students to stay in Prince Albert and pursue their dreams in the game,” Maloney said.

Global’s partnership with Carlton is intended to provide an opportunity for area students to add a comprehensive program to their high school education that would focus on academics, leadership, and on-ice skills.

Taylor said that the programs currently being run across Alberta don’t make students’ lives any more strenuous as it fits within their regular timetable. As it looks right now, Global would fit in one period of the day throughout the week, and students would receive credit toward graduation.

Global has been working in close partnership with Randy Emmerson of Saskatchewan Rivers Public School Division along with Jeff Court, Principal at Carlton to find a way to make their program fit the community.

Maloney commended Court for his “innovative, visionary approach to new-age education,” providing opportunity for students to pursue their passions as part of their daily school life.

He also acknowledged that conversations with Emmerson have brought to light a number of other popular sports in the community that could potentially be involved in the program down the road.

Global staff will be on hand for a meet and greet at Carlton’s Open House on Wednesday at 6 p.m., and will be holding their own information night Thursday at 7 p.m.

Both events are open to the public and all parents, players, and coaches are encouraged to attend.
