Prince Albert’s Alex Soyko has a big move coming up.

The 18-year-old Carlton senior accepted a scholarship at University of King’s College in Halifax, and will play basketball next season for the Blue Devils.

“Im kind of nervous but I am really excited because I’ve worked hard. Since Grade 9 I’ve been in the gym everyday shooting and so it’s nice to see hard work can pay off,” she said.

Soyko’s decison to play at the Halifax University comes after being personally approached by scouts. Soyko has not yet decided on a major but hinted she will likely pursue a path in kinesiology.

“My mom is excited and my dad, but my mom doesn’t want me to leave,” she said with a laugh.

Soyko is a triplet and she and her two sisters prove they are a triple threat in every sense of the term. Soyko’s sisters have also been offered university scholarships and will play hockey next season in Lethbridge.

Kelsey Pearson has coached Soyko the past two seasons at Carlton and told paNOW she was not surprised when she learned Soyko was offered a scholarship. She explained the only question was which college Soyko would attend.

“She’s just that gritty player that never gives up. Her defence is amazing and she’s always in there getting the boards despite her size,” Pearson said.

Wednesday night’s practice at Carlton was bittersweet for the team, coming just hours after receiving word the rest of the season was being scrapped. The Saskatchewan High School Athletics Association made the decision in response to the lack of progress in the ongoing contract talks between the provincial government and the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation.

“I love those girls and my heart breaks for them today. I’m just glad some of them have the opportunity to go and play after high school,” Pearson said.
