P.A. firefighters get new contract

The city of Prince Albert and its firefighters have agreed on a new three year contact.

It will see a 6.81 per cent wage increase over three years, but no retro-pay for 2019 or the beginning of 2020.

The previous contract between the union representing firefighters and the City expired on Dec. 31, 2018. The two parties subsequently reached a tentative bargaining agreement and have been in negotiations on the present contract since September 2019.

“Negotiations seem, for some reason, to take longer and longer,” Mayor Greg Dionne told paNOW. “This one I thought was very fair, they got some concessions, we got some concessions and that’s what negotiations are about, so I’m very pleased with the contract.”

The total increased cost of the agreement is $531,749.

The city saved $209,410 by not having to pay out retro pay.

Language changes in the contract will eliminate the ability to bank stat holidays, which will reduce leave and overtime expenditures.

Changes were also made to how sick pay is claimed. While before, a firefighter needed to fill out a declaration stating they were ill, now a doctor’s note will be required instead.

In a vestige of historical contracts, muskrat or beaver fur hats were also removed from the standard uniform kit. Dionne said this was not a contentious item.

“They offered that up because they don’t wear them anyone,” he said.

The new contract will expire at the end of 2021.
