Charles seeks to expand recreational opportunities as Stanley Mission councillor

At 29 years old, Jimmy Charles believes he can be a new, young voice in Stanley Mission as a recently elected councillor.

“I’m extremely happy with the support I got,” he said. “I want to say a big thank you to everybody for all the support. I look forward to working with all the Lac La Ronge Indian Band leadership and I look forward to meeting them next week at chief and council orientation.”

Charles was voted in as a councillor during the general election last week and received 645 votes. He is the only new councillor in Stanley Mission as Linda Charles with 658 votes and John Roberts with 407 were both re-elected. Charles noted he’s eager to work alongside them and bring positive changes to the community.

Charles was also asked to run in the previous election, but he decided against it because there was still work he wanted to accomplish as the local recreation director. He had been in that position for five years and he worked to develop the minor hockey program or organize various events.

“I’ve always helped at every community event I could,” Charles said. “I’m always around and I always volunteer at events.”

Charles, who was nominated by Cora Roberts and David Mckenzie, wants to continue developing recreational opportunities in Stanley Mission while in office. He would like to upgrade various facilities, build playgrounds in the new subdivision and focus on healthy living like bringing a fitness centre to the community. Charles was also asked by local children to work on a basketball court.

Charles joins Devin Bernatchez in Sucker River and John Halkett in Little Red River as new band councillors.
