The North East School Division (NESD) has released the results of a supplemental learning survey.

Families with children in the division were asked for their feedback about the learning provided after the COVID-19 pandemic forced the closure of schools in March.

Director of Education Don Rempel told northeastNOW the feedback was appreciated.

He said parents realized the challenges inherent in the supplemental learning program that was quickly put together following the school closures.

“They were very appreciative of the hard work that teachers are doing, and that the regular communication between teachers and students has been a real support,” Rempel said.

He said the survey revealed that it was a challenge for many homes to have enough devices to handle the number of different platforms students used.

The survey also showed the students liked to be able to see their teacher and other classmates, and have online conversations whenever possible.

Rempel said another challenge was the ability to maintain a structure through the school day, with many parents gone due to work commitments.

The North East School Division had over 85 per cent of students that began supplemental learning when it was first introduced in March.

“That’s starting to drop off as we near the end of June, because it is a voluntary program,” Rempel said.

He added many high school students chose to continue in one or two courses in which they wanted to improve their marks, or if they needed the pre-requisite skills for future classes.

“We’ve been very open that students can come in and out of supplemental learning through this period of time, and we still encourage people to take advantage of the supports that are being provided by the teachers of the North East School Division,” Rempel said.

The final day of supplemental learning will be June 19, with report cards emailed at the end of the month.
