Miller Field in Melfort to receive funding for apron repair

Melfort’s airport will soon see some improvements, thanks to a provincial grant.

The government announced it will chip in $275,000 toward the full rehabilitation of the apron at Miller Field.

Melfort Mayor Rick Lang told northeastNOW he and other administrators were pleased to receive the funding through the Community Airport Partnership (CAP) program.

“It’s great that we received that funding because that was certainly necessary to proceed with the apron [repairs] out there,” Lang said. He added the work on the apron was dependent on that specific funding.

“If we got the CAP funding that we applied for, we would be able to proceed with the reconstruction of the apron,” Lang said. “If we didn’t get that funding then we really didn’t know what the answer was with respect to that apron.”

Lang said the apron is valuable for several reasons. It allows the air ambulance to come and go as needed, and it allows for the aerial spraying for surrounding rural municipalities. He said based on the work put into the application, the city was confident they would receive the funding.

The project should go out to tender soon, Lang said, and work could begin in early July.

Lang said Melfort’s airport is important to the entire region as it enables services like the air ambulance and aerial spraying.

“It is something that is utilized by all of our surrounding [rural municipalities] and even other municipalities — towns, villages — within a short distance from the city of Melfort,” Lang said.

Fifteen community airports received funding including:

  • Humboldt: $12,500 for relocating power lines
  • Prince Albert: $241,500 for Taxiway F edge lighting, pull-pits, and infrastructure, Taxiway B installation of storm sewer and catch basins
  • Wynyard: $45,000 for repairing of cracks, slurry seal, and paint markings

The provincial government said in its news release over $9 million has been invested in community airports since 2007.
