Longest Day of Golf to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters

Jun 25, 2020 | 10:46 AM

A day of golf to raise funds for Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) in Humboldt will look a little different this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The annual Diva for a Day golf tournament was postponed to 2021 but a teacher in the Horizon School Division is lending a hand to the group.

Avid golfer Paul Raycroft was approached by General Manager of the Humboldt Golf Club (HGC), Corey Schweitzer about bringing his ‘longest day of golf’ event to Humboldt.

“Obviously I love golf, it has been a a big part of my life for the last 20 years or so,” Raycroft said. “It’s four guys that know each other well and are friends that get to spend the day together and play golf, selfishly speaking. But at the same time, the goal is to raise as much money as we can for Big Brothers Big Sisters.”

Raycroft who is also a familiar name on the men’s Saskatchewan amateur tour used to coordinate the same event in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. His group played at most 108 holes, and is upping the goal for the Humboldt event to 120 holes.

Raycroft will be joined by former HGC General Manager Cam Koskie and current HGC employees Schweitzer and Aaron Baker. The four will play from sunrise to sunset this Sunday for pledges.

Those who make a pledge will also be entered to win a variety of prizes.

As a teacher and guidance counsellor, Raycroft said he continues to see the importance of mentorship.

“There is a lot of kids out with split families or single-parent families and that type of thing,” Raycroft said. “I think a lot of these situations arise and it fills a void in kids’ lives.”

He referred to Brody Hinz who lost his life in the Humboldt Broncos bus crash in 2018 who was very active in the BBBS community and also a former student of Raycroft.

“I just want to do a little bit and give back and help kids,” Raycroft said.

Pledges can be made here or call Raycroft at 306.752.1009.
