Resort villages plan for August election

Area resort villages are planning for a new municipal election date this summer.

Elections will be held Aug. 29 this year.

For the Resort Village of Cochin the administrator Amber Loeppky will act as the returning officer and assistant administrator Jennifer Fisher as the deputy returning officer.

Fisher confirmed the date for Resort Villages to hold their elections is set by the federal government.

“It’s usually the last Saturday in July but because of the Coronavirus they had changed it,” she said of the COVID-19 precautions.

Voting will take place at the Cochin community hall, located off Highway 4.

The advance poll date will be Aug. 15.

Fisher said the village is allowing mail-in ballots to accommodate property owners who may have left their summer cabins by the later election date this year.

Mail in ballots will be available for those who register prior to Aug. 6.

For individuals seeking election, nomination forms will be accepted until July 25.

For the Resort Village of Aquadeo, voting will take place at the village’s community hall.

COVID-19 precautions will be followed.

“We have a large community hall,” administrator Brian de Montbrun, the acting returning officer, said. “We will have people come in one side of the building and go out the other side.”

An advance poll has been set for Aug. 15. Similar to other election years for the village, there will be no mail in ballots.

De Montbrun said mail in ballots are not available due to the logistics involved and the added cost.
