Outreach workers step up to ensure vulnerable population isn’t forgotten

Even though Scattered Site Outreach Program in La Ronge temporarily closed this week, outreach workers continue to ensure clients have the helping hand they need.

Not long after the facility was closed, Tina Johnson published a social media post asking for cash donations from the public. She said within a half-hour, local residents donated $1,000 to be used for food for lunches and other supplies.

“After Scattered closed down, myself and a few other staff members decided we wanted to continue providing services for our clients the best we can,” Johnson said. “I talked with Jackie and Lee-Wayne, and we talked a bit about just putting together a bagged lunch for our guys and handing them out once per day.”

Outreach workers have so far delivered sandwiches, apples, boiled eggs and cases of water. They also purchased tents, sleeping bags, bug spray and dry socks with the donations.

Johnson also learned this week the Saskatchewan Health Authority will be organizing a mobile soup kitchen to provide clients lunch, as well as harm reduction services. That will occur Monday to Friday and Johnson noted outreach workers will feed clients supper on those days too.

“That way they aren’t just getting one meal per day, they are getting two,” she said.

When Johnson first went to meet clients after Scattered Site closed down, she said they had felt they had been abandoned but were happy to see her. She noted, however, the visit went from sombre to jovial as she provided a little bit of hope that they wouldn’t be forgotten.

If anyone would like to make donations to this cause, they can e-transfer Johnson at alicornstables@outlook.com. Those who do should be aware Johnson can’t issue charitable receipts.
