Meals on Wheels looking for more volunteers for Battlefords and ML

Jul 7, 2020 | 9:00 AM

Those will a little free time in the day and a desire to help others might be interested in this opportunity.

The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) is currently looking for more volunteers for the Battlefords and Meadow Lake to assist in delivering meals for the Meals on Wheels program.

Karen Pernala is the SHA volunteer services coordinator for the Battlefords and Meadow Lake Home Care and coordinates the Meals on Wheels program.

She said the program continues to grow in the area, with five routes operating in North Battleford, one in Battleford and two in Meadow Lake.

Volunteers deliver about 1,200 meals each month to people in the Battlefords and about 400 meals per month in Meadow Lake.

“It wouldn’t be possible for sure without our volunteers,” Pernala said. “Meals on Wheels is one of our volunteer-based programs that has been present all during the pandemic and continues as a valuable service where volunteers deliver meals to Home Care clients in need of regular meals.”

Any adults from ages 18 to 65 who wish to volunteer are invited to apply. Applicants need to have a criminal record check completed to be eligible.

Volunteers must be available between 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Mondays to Fridays to deliver meals. They will also be required to follow COVID-19 precautions for their own and the clients’ safety.

Volunteers deliver meals to Home Care clients that are in need of a meal.

Pernala said due to public health measures during the pandemic, current volunteers who are over the age of 65 have been asked to refrain from helping with the program at this time as a precaution. As a result, more volunteers are required to meet the need.

Anyone interested in volunteering can call Karen at 306-446-7388 or Darlene at 306-446-6892 to enquire.

Pernala said volunteers often enjoy helping with the program.

“It’s fun, it’s rewarding, and our clients are happy to see the volunteers,” she said.
