Meals on Wheels volunteers bring a smile with every delivery

The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) is still looking for more volunteers for the area’s Meals on Wheels program.

Jayna Hannah has been volunteering on and off with a colleague in North Battleford for a few years through her work with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate The Battlefords.

“We do it as an office,” she said. “Tracy [Voigt] and I just started delivering this month again.”

“We enjoy helping out,” Hannah said. “It only takes about half an hour a day. It’s nice to be able to help those in the community that need the service. It is not a hard job to do, and it brings people joy to drop off their meals before lunch.”

Hannah also volunteers to deliver meals with her mother, Adele Giefer, who is also an active volunteer.

Hannah believes it’s important for people to step up and show their support in the area, in whatever way they can.

“The community needs volunteers to run a lot of these programs, and to help people out in the community that need [assistance],” Hannah said.

Brent Dimmick, of River City Plumbing and Heating in North Battleford, also enjoys volunteering with the Meals on Wheels program, after starting just two weeks ago with a colleague.

“You get to do a good thing for somebody,” he said. “It’s just to help people who can’t get out of their house.”

Dimmick enjoys the opportunity to meet more people as well, while taking part in the program.

To anyone thinking of volunteering themselves, Dimmick suggests they simply “give it a try,” adding maybe they will find they enjoy it as well.

The SHA’s Darlene Kingwell, manager of volunteer services in the Battlefords and Meadow Lake, said many volunteers help the Meals on Wheels program be such a success.

“We are so grateful for our community for making the delivery of meals possible during this difficult time brought on by the pandemic,” Kingwell said.

Meals on Wheels operates routes in North Battleford, Battleford and Meadow Lake in the area.
