MHAC to make announcement on Melfort Heliport on Wednesday

Jul 28, 2020 | 5:00 PM

A news conference about the Melfort Heliport project is being held by the Municipal Health Advocacy Committee Wednesday, July 29.

Media will gather at the site of the proposed heliport on the Melfort Hospital grounds.

It’s not known the exact nature of the news conference; however, it was revealed a few weeks ago that fundraising for the project was about $47,000 short of where it needed to be to award the tender.

Brent Lutz with the city told northeastNOW at that time they hoped the committee would be successful in raising the money in a relatively short time so the project could be completed by Sept. 30 as planned.

The project would see a heliport constructed at the site to allow STARS to transfer trauma patients directly from Melfort Hospital to the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital in Saskatoon.

Lutz said the helipad would cut about an hour off the transfer time, which is critical in trauma situations.

Council voted to allow the construction of a heliport in 2018, and fundraising for the project began early in 2020.
