Living Sky implementing mask protocols as COVID-19 precaution

Living Sky School Division (LSSD) plans to have mask-wearing protocols in place as a COVID-19 precaution when schools reopen in September.

In a letter to parents, the division cited guidance from the province’s chief medical health officer for school divisions considering implementing level two reopening plans

The division said after further consultation with its regional public health team, Living Sky’s board came to a consensus to approve the use of masks within its schools.

“We made the decision to implement these additional safety measures to enhance provisions already in place to protect students and staff,” Living Sky’s director of education Brenda Vickers and board chair Ronna Pethick said.

The following mask protocols will be in effect:

All students will be required to wear a mask on buses.

For grades pre-kindergarten to Grade 3 students, masks will not be required. Parents may choose to provide masks for their children, and school staff will support their use during school hours.

For Grade 4 to 12 students, masks are required where physical distancing is not possible. Masks must be worn when entering or exiting the school, while inside classrooms, hallways or common areas when two metres of physical distancing is not possible. Masks are not required for outside activities as long as physical distancing is in place.

All staff are required to wear masks where physical distancing is not possible. Some masks will be provided.

The division stated a supply of disposable face masks will be available for all students and will be provided on the first day of school. Students are also encouraged to bring their own non-medical cloth masks.

Students who require a medical exemption from wearing a mask may make an application to the school principal. However, the division indicated students and staff who prefer not to wear a mask will not be exempt.

“The mask protocol is a safety measure for all students and staff, so only medical exemptions will be available,” the division stated. “All protocols, including masks, will be re-evaluated as the medical situation in Saskatchewan evolves. We will continue to communicate with you on a regular basis.”
