NESPCA planning barbecues, other fundraisers during COVID-19

The North East SPCA (NESPCA) continues to try and raise funds during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A barbecue is set for Thursday, Aug. 20, but it’ll be a little bit different. To follow all COVID-19 guidelines, it’ll be a “drive-by” barbecue. People are asked to call ahead and place their order before going to pick it up at the Harry and Eve Vickar Shelter.

Shelter Manager Kristy Mason said the funds will go back into their operating budget.

“Just to do a little bit of everything,” she said. “Spays and neuters, vaccinations, things like that for the animals.”

Mason said during the current pandemic, it’s been difficult for them to do as much fundraising as they would normally do.

“We’ve definitely taken a big hit,” Mason said. “We’re used to doing barbecues every week pretty well, sometimes multiple times a week, and they usually bring in a pretty good chunk of change for us.”

The NESPCA is holding another barbecue on Sept. 10, but it’ll be a “double-header,” according to Mason. There will be an opportunity at lunch and supper times to make an order. Mason said they hope to give the opportunity for those in the field farming and those working long hours at that time of year.

On top of barbecues, the NESPCA has a few other fundraisers in the works as well. Aug. 27 is the date for the NESPCA garage sale, but there’s still a few things to be worked out with timing. People are asked to donate items they would like to contribute and anyone wanting to attend will need to make an appointment to check out the garage sale. Mason also said an online trivia night is in the works for the coming weeks.
