The second annual sandbag fundraiser collected over $3,000 for three non profit and charity organizations in the Battlefords this year.

The project organized by the North Battleford Part-Time Firefighters Association ran from the fall of 2019 to the spring of 2020.

The fundraiser this year topped last year’s tally of $1,500.

“Our sandbag fundraiser this season was a big success, raising more than $3,000 for three community organizations,” North Battleford Part-Time Firefighters’ Association president and part-time firefighter Jonathon Kadler said.

From the $3,000 raised, $1,000 was presented to each of the following three organizations: Battlefords and Area Sexual Assault Centre, Battlefords Interval House, and Jump Start. All funds raised stay in the community.

Kadler said the funds were given out a little later this year because the pandemic which started in March prevented the North Battleford Part-Time Firefighters’ Association members from getting together for the effort.

Many of the sandbags this year were purchased by commercial enterprises, such as retail stores and gas stations, that bought them in bulk to re-sell to customers.

Kadler said the sponsors this year also helped last year as well. Ken and Terry’s Construction donated the sand needed to make the project a success. K and K Glass provided the truck and trailer as well the location to make and store the sandbags.

Sandbags, weighing about 50 lbs. a bag, and are still for sale for $5 per bag. They can be picked up at K and K Glass on 100 Street.

Kadler said every sandbag was handmade by a North Battleford Part-Time Firefighter.

Any accumulated funds over the summer from further sales will be added to a future donation for the community.
