Pages in the Park Pop Up Tents (A Free Summer Literacy Initiative)

Pages in the Park Pop Up Tents was a free literacy initiative sponsored by Light of Christ Catholic School Division, the ministry of Education and Frontier College.

For over a week, families were able to drop by LOCCSD school playgrounds to read the books provided, partake in various related activities and leave with books of their own!

Camp leaders organized fun-filled activities for families that were enjoyed by school-aged kids in the absence of summer literacy camps this year due to COVID 19.

The locations were: Mondays at Holy Family, Tuesdays at St. Mary’s, Wednesdays at EMBM, and Thursdays at Notre Dame. Activities were easily accessible and delivered in a flexible come and go style to suit family lifestyles. It’s a great way to pass some time together as a family in the absence of those familiar road trips families often take during summer holidays. Make this part of your summer “staycation.”

What we heard from families loud and clear was that they loved the outdoor format, and that they loved having a “safe” family activity that they could do during COVID.

Families were excited to go home with great literature they didn’t need to pay for and about 2/3 of the kids came back on a regular basis. Kids got to participate in a theme of the day, various literacy activities, scavenger hunts and “book shopping” while 2 certified B.Ed teachers facilitated the camp.
