Mustangs acquire Bacovsky from Klippers

The Melfort Mustangs have added to their club between the pipes.

The Mustangs have traded for 2001-born goalie Steven Bacovsky from the Kindersley Klippers in exchange for a Player Development Fee (PDF), as well as a fourth round draft pick in the 2021 SJHL Bantam Draft.

“We’re happy to be able to acquire Steven. He’s a guy we’ve watched for quite some time and have done research on,” said Mustangs head coach and general manager Trevor Blevins in a release. “He’s a big goalie who moves well and plays aggressive. He plays a similar style to goalies we’ve had in the past.”

Bacovsky, a Calgary, Alta. product, began the 2019/2020 season with the La Ronge Ice Wolves, going 1-7 in eight games, to go along with a 4.30 goals against average (GAA), and a .887 save percentage. He was then traded in late November to the Klippers in a deal that included former Mustang defenceman Jake Hobson, and former Mustangs draft pick Boston Maxwell. In 20 games with the Klippers, Bacovsky went 9-9-1, with a 3.19 GAA, a .885 save percentage, and one shutout.

The now 19-year-old also played three games against the Mustangs last season. The first was with the Ice Wolves in September, a game the Mustangs won. Bacovsky made 34 saves on 39 shots in that outing. The next two came as a member of the Klippers, and both were overtime wins for Bacovsky’s Klippers. In late January, Bacovsky made 22 saves in a 3-2 shootout win, before making 23 saves in and early February 3-2 overtime win.

Prior to his time in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL), Bacovsky spent two seasons with the Airdrie CFR Bisons in the Alberta U18 AAA ranks. He also played in two games for the Alberta Junior Hockey League’s Grand Prairie Storm in 2017/2018.

The SJHL still has a tentative date to begin the season on Oct. 9, but they still are waiting on government and Saskatchewan Health Authority approval.
