Drive Safely

Gravel Road Safety

Sep 15, 2020 | 8:26 AM

When travelling across our prairie province, you will notice that we have many unpaved and gravel roads. Sadly, as of August 31, 2020, there have been 17 fatalities on gravel roads in Saskatchewan this year, which is a higher than normal fatality rate than previous years.

The Saskatchewan RCMP, along with SGI and Saskatchewan Worker’s Compensation Board, would like to remind all drivers – whether they are experienced in driving on gravel roads, or have never driven on them, to understand the conditions they can bring and encourage all drivers to:

• Slow down on gravel – drive appropriately for current road conditions. In ideal road conditions, the speed limit on gravel roads is 80 km/hr unless otherwise posted.

• Wheel traction significantly decreases on gravel versus pavement. If you feel like you are losing control – do NOT brake hard. Take your foot off of the gas pedal and continue to steer gently in the direction you want to go.
