New Saskatchewan residents invited to winter preparedness clinics in Humboldt area

Winter preparedness clinics are being hosted by Safe Communities Humboldt and Area for new Saskatchewan residents.

The clinics offer information to those not familiar with a cold Saskatchewan winter, according to Executive Director Shari Hinz.

“We have severe conditions in our winter and so we want to make sure that people are prepared and know that conditions can change quickly,” Hinz said.

Topics covered include safe winter travel, pedestrian/vehicle safety, proper dress and the signs and symptoms of frostbite and hypothermia.

“If they do happen to be enjoying the outdoor weather, when it is time to go in and warm up and what type of gear keeps them safe and warm in that environment,” Hinz said.

Child safety topics are also covered as well as heating homes safely.

“Making sure that furnaces are operating properly, making sure if you have side-location chimneys on their homes that they are free of snow,” Hinz said. “These are good tips for anyone but especially for anyone new, it is vital information to keep them safe throughout the season.”

This is the ninth annual winter preparedness set of clinics hosted by the organization and their partners. This years partners include the Humboldt Regional Newcomers Centre, Carlton Trail College, Humboldt and District Ambulance Service, Humboldt Fire Department, Lanigan and District Ambulance, LeRoy Fire Department, SGI, and PARTNERS Family Services.

The clinics typically include winter clothing and accessory drive for area newcomers, but those can’t happen this year due to pandemic restrictions.

“Organizations like the Good Neighbour Store in Humboldt offer items like that year-round and cost for those things is normally very low and it goes to support a great organization,” Hinz said.

The clinics will be held on Sept. 30 at the Humboldt Curling Rink Lounge from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and on Oct. 7 at the LeRoy Seniors Centre from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
