The Chief Sabitawasis School on the Fishing Lake First Nation has closed and will move to online learning because of nearby cases of COVID-19.

An advisory was sent out on Tuesday night from the Saskatchewan Health Authority about potential COVID-19 exposure at businesses in nearby Wynyard and Foam Lake.

The advisory included the Preston Crossing Walmart in Saskatoon on Sept. 4, 5, 7, and 10. The Foam Lake Husky on Sept. 6 and the Wynyard A&W the same evening.

The school made a post on Facebook later that same night stating the closure of the school, effective the next day.

“It has come to our attention of the cases of COVID-19 in the surrounding communities,” the statement said. “Classes will be 100 per cent online.”

The Fishing Lake School informed parents and students on Tuesday night, they would move to online learning.

School staff is currently working to get each home set up with a laptop or desktop computer, and an iPad to assist in online learning.

Parents and students were told they would have the tools and devices to learn from home by Sept. 23.

The school declined request for comments to northeastNOW.

The Chief Sabitawasis School officially opened to students in February of 2020 after decades of portable trailers being used as a school. The school then closed its doors in March when the pandemic began.
