‘Total nonsense’: Stovel Park vandalized, washroom closed to public

Oct 7, 2020 | 5:47 PM

Stovel Park in Melfort was given an unwelcome entry into autumn.

The park was vandalized during school hours, according to a Facebook comment by the Friends of Stovel Park. A table was broken, and fires were lit in the washroom. The Friends of Stovel Park said the washroom would be closed for the rest of the season.

Murray Wall was part of the group that spearheaded the fundraising to rebuild the park and was on the ground floor during the renovations. He said the vandalism isn’t new, but they don’t know how to fix it.

“There was a lot of blood, sweat and tears going into rebuilding that park,” Wall said. “Tens of thousands of dollars and legacy money went into it, and then some clowns … they ruined it for everybody. We’ve got great people and support in this community, but we’ve got a few people who aren’t. It’s just total nonsense.”

Wall said he and his colleagues have talked since the vandalism, but they’re unsure of what the next steps should be. He mentioned how the public could feel uneasy about helping fund repairs for Stovel Park if it will continue to be vandalized, especially amidst the coronavirus pandemic.

Wall encourages anyone with information on the vandalism to come forward.

“I’m almost at a loss for words… come forward, let’s sort this out.”
