Signori running in Melfort election for fourth time

Nominations have closed for the upcoming municipal election, and we’re continuing to learn about the candidates.

In Melfort, Don Signori has announced his intention to run for a seat on council. He told northeastNOW that he wants to help Melfort grow.

“I want to provide opportunities for our children and our grandchildren,” Signori said. “And the only way that we can do that is by adding more businesses in the community and attracting more businesses to the community.”

Signori said he’s got a few things he wants to promote to help grow Melfort, all of which tying in to getting Melfort’s population to 10,000 people within this decade.

“Tourism, shopping locally,” he said. “I’m going to promote that over the next four years continuously, to shop locally and how vital it is to the community.”

Previously, Signori was a director and vice-president of the Melfort Chamber of Commerce when it was still running, and he’s also been a member of a number of different committees with the City of Melfort.

It’s also not the first time that Signori has had his name on City of Melfort election ballot. In 1985, he ran for the first time, looking for a seat on council. That bid was unsuccessful and he tried once again in 1988, not receiving enough votes. Then in 2016, Signori ran for mayor against incumbent Rick Lang, as well as Nicole Gagne. Signori also lost in that election.

“I wasn’t prepared at that time, I had good ideas, but I wasn’t ready,” Signori said. “In 2016, I had good ideas again, but I wasn’t ready. This time, I’m absolutely ready.”

Signori added he’s got the drive and passion and isn’t afraid to stand up and say something.

He’s also making sure as many people as possible get out and vote this year.

“Council needs to know what the people want,” he said. “If we only get a 30 or 35 per cent turnout, council, I don’t believe really knows what the people want.”

Voters head to the polls on Nov. 9.
