P.A. bodybuilder stands above the rest

Prince Albert’s Kyla Baun says the feeling of looking out at the judges and crowd last weekend in Calgary was one of pure happiness.

The 33-year-old finished first in her division at the “Alberta Summer Naturals,” a bodybuilding competition originally scheduled for July but postponed several times. Sanctioned by the Canadian Physique Alliance, the drug tested event acts as a qualifier for athletes for Natural National Shows.

“I worked my butt off for an entire year to get to that point so there was nothing really that can replace that feeling,” Baun said.

Baun is no stranger to competition, and last month finished third at another event in Winnipeg. She’s accomplished all this while working a full time job in corrections. Braun acknowledged for paNOW the effort of balancing work and training is a challenge.

“It’s my passion so if you want something bad enough, you make it work,” she said.

Baun was competing in the Bikini F division, which is for athletes 5’8” and over.

Like many other athletic events, bodybuilding competitions have also been impacted by COVID-19. Baun noted the crowds are normally a lot bigger, and all the participants were wearing masks with the exception of the time they spent on stage.

Normally at these competitions, the judging is done in the morning and the show and the award presentations are done at night.

“This year it was all done in one shot. You’re judged, you step off stage, they call you right back and they hand out the award,” Baun said.

Training for a competition of this nature is no small feat, and requires months of preparation including strict dieting. Acknowledging her own goal driven personality, Baun said competing in a bodybuilding contest is one of the hardest things a person can do.

“It takes patience discipline and consistency,” she said. “Just getting to the stage this year was a huge accomplishment in itself and I congratulate every other athlete out there who didn’t give up.”
