Nipawin Salvation Army chosen to be emergency pet food bank
The Saskatchewan SPCA established the Saskatchewan Emergency Pet Food Bank on Wednesday, Nov. 18, and the northeast has a spot.
Nipawin Salvation Army Food Bank was chosen to be one of eight partners across the province. Sheri Fengstad, community services director for Nipawin Salvation Army, told northeastNOW they had applied to be one of the partners months prior to the announcement. She was thrilled to hear they made the cut.
“People right now are struggling to feed themselves, never mind their pets,” Fengstad said. “Sometimes people will go without food themselves just so their pets can get food. Generally, we prioritize people and not their pets. But we’re so happy we’re getting some pet food so we can distribute it. People’s pets are so important for their mental health, during these times especially… it’s really important for people to still have their pets and look after them properly.”
Fengstad said there is a need for pet food in the Nipawin area. The Salvation Army is often asked if they have pet food and just as often, they have to say no. She said they’ll promote the ask for donations of pet food more going forward.
