Hawks return to win column in Kindersley

The Nipawin Hawks are back in the win column after a 3-2 victory on Friday night against the Kindersley Klippers.

In the first of four straight meetings between the two Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) teams, the Hawks rebounded from a disappointing 6-3 loss on Nov. 17 against La Ronge. Josh Lester led the way for Nipawin scoring once and setting up both of the other Hawks goals. The 20-year-old Calgary product said the win was a good start to the weekend.

“It felt real good,” Lester told northeastNOW after the game. “A road game, five and a half hours away, it’s tough to get the legs going, but it’s nice for the boys to get the win.”

Kindersley opened the scoring when former Hawk Ethan Mack beat Ross Hawryluk near the halfway point of the first period. Andrew Schaab answered on a Nipawin powerplay a few minutes later tying the game at 1-1. Just ten seconds after that another former Hawk, Eric Sorensen restored the Kindersley lead. Lester tied the game with under three minutes to play in the second period.

Burke Simpson tallied the winner just passed the midway point of the second stanza. Lester said despite the setback versus La Ronge the team is playing well after a 4-1 record start to the year.

“I think the boys are finally gelling. There was a couple things we couldn’t control against La Ronge and some things we need to tweak, but we got it in order tonight and came out with the win,” he said.

Hawryluk made his fifth straight start in net for the Hawks, he stopped 26 shots in the win. Brett Sweet took the loss in his SJHL debut, he made 23 saves.

The two teams meet again in Nipawin on Saturday. Lester said there is still some room for improvement ahead of the rematch that begins at 7:30 p.m.

“We want to come out with a better start,” he said. “We’re going to watch some video, see what we can focus on and come back with another two points.”
