Salvation Army kettle campaign kicks off in Melfort

Salvation Army kettles are now set-up around the community.

Fedusiak Funeral Chapel provided a $1,000 cheque to kick-off the kettle campaign on Monday, Nov. 23 in Melfort.

“Our goal this year is $17,000, and we are really hoping to meet that as it is going to be a difficult year,” Captain Rick Robins said. “We can’t do a lot of the fundraising that we normally would have done.”

Darren Fedusiak presented the cheque to the Salvation Army in hopes of encouraging other businesses to do the same.

“He wanted to just help and hopefully get others to just stop and think about those in need this year,” Robins said.

Kettles can be found at Cindy’s Independent Grocer and the Co-op grocery store in the mall and run from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday to Saturday.

Volunteers are on in low supply this year to sit at kettles and Robins invites anyone interested in helping to contact the thrift store at 306-752-3525.

“We know that we are going to take a hit on fundraising this year and we will really be needing help from our community to bridge that gap,” Robins said.

Kettle donations help to fund the Christmas hamper campaign as well as programs throughout the year that help in feeding people, housing people and getting people to rehab.

The yearly-budget is created in reference to what comes in at Christmas time and if those funds don’t come in, the rest of the year can be very difficult.

Registration for Christmas hampers began at the beginning of November with a bit of a difference this year with COVID-19 restrictions in place. Those wishing to receive hampers were asked to call ahead and book a time to register.

“Right now, we are in the mid-hundreds for Christmas hampers already and we still have two more registration days,” Robins said.

Telephone registrations have opened for those who are uncomfortable leaving their homes to register in person.

Toy bins have been placed at Mohawk Animal Clinic, Dairy Queen, Western Financial, and Co-op Grocery Store. The Bargain Shop is doing their fill-the-sleigh drive as well.

An online kettle can also be created by businesses and individuals at fillthekettle.com. The program goes by postal code and the funds collected goes to the nearest Salvation Army store.
