Melfort Museum raising operational funds through online silent auction

Dec 4, 2020 | 6:00 AM

The Melfort and District Museum is moving its silent auction online to raise funds for operations.

The museum would normally be planning their annual Christmas Dinner and silent auction event at this time of year but that has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The dinner brings in significant funds for the museum each year according to curator Gail Marie Anderson.

“Traditionally, we make $5,000 on our silent auction,” Anderson said. “I don’t know that we will do $5,000 but we have also got some cash donations as well as the item donations.”

The museum celebration of Christmas silent auction began on Tuesday and runs until Dec. 14 at 5 p.m. Bids can be placed on the Melfort and District Museum Celebration of Christmas Facebook page on 30 different themed baskets.

“We encourage people to look at the Melfort and District Museum page and join the silent auction group to get their bids in,” Anderson said.

All of the funds brought in will go to museum general operations.

The museum was also unable to host its traditional summer barbecue fundraisers this year as well. The museum was closed in the spring at the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak in Saskatchewan and re-opened on July 6.

Staff at the museum were able to offer tours but unfortunately, the usual children’s programs were cancelled and barbecue fundraisers weren’t able to go ahead which fund operations throughout the year.
