North Stars’ Whyte happy to shine outside the spotlight

For Battlefords North Stars office and marketing manager Jennifer Whyte, the rink is much more than just a place to catch a game on a Saturday night.

Fans of the team may recognize her as the person they buy their tickets from, or as the mind behind a range of intermission mini-games, including everything from toddler tricycle relay races to shoot-to-win challenges.

However, those components are but the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the range of responsibilities Whyte carries out for the team. Operating more from within the shadows, it is her work behind the scenes that helps ensure things run smoothly, both on game days and beyond.

Whyte also sources, designs, and prices the North Stars’ merchandise, manages the team’s corporate sponsorships and promotes the team’s visibility. In addition to lending her voice to the media when needed, she also manages the social media sites of the team on various online social platforms.

“I definitely wear a lot of hats,” Whyte said with a laugh. “Many of them are a bit more behind the scenes, but that’s more than fine with me. I’m comfortable with working behind the scenes.”

Whether it is a game day in a regular year with hundreds of screaming fans or the more mellowed ambiance of pucks and whistles during morning practice, Whyte said she enjoys the vast array of what it means to show up to work each day at the Civic Centre.

“It’s the atmosphere and the people, and for me on the day-to-day, there’s also that nice quiet,” Whyte said. “There’s obviously a lot of [hockey noise] in the morning [during practice] but other than that it’s a pretty quiet office setting, and in terms of coming back every day, it’s just a place I want to be.”

While the postponement of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season has provided a number of unique challenges for Whyte and the team, she said the overwhelming show of support from the community has been nothing short of incredible.

“The support shown by the team sponsors, fans, volunteers, and the board has really meant the world to us,” she said. “We are still hopeful we will start again in January, and at the end of the day, this team has become a huge part of who I am as a person and my family as well. It’s a huge part of this community and I love being a part of it.”
