Battlefords Humane Society says pet hamper project a success

Jan 6, 2021 | 4:45 PM

The Battlefords Humane Society had a successful first year with its Pet Christmas Hamper project.

“The Christmas hampers went really well,” shelter coordinator Michelle Spark said.

The campaign was started to help families with pets in need impacted by COVID-19 restrictions.

The Battlefords Humane Society partnered on the project with the Saskatchewan SPCA, Discovery Co-op, Horizon Pet Food, Pet Valu and No Frills. The society gave out about 40 hampers over the holidays.

Pet Valu had a promotion in which people donated gift cards to the Humane Society, and ended up collecting over $2,000 in gift cards for the hamper project.

The Humane Society also received additional donations from the community.

Hampers contained pet food, treats, toys, blankets. Some contained an animal bed.

Spark said for some families still struggling, the society could make up a few more hampers with some left-over donations it received.

“If there are people still in need during COVID, please don’t be afraid to contact us,” she said.

The project was such a success the society members are looking at continuing it next year.

The local humane society created 2021 calendars featuring pictures of adopted pets submitted by families. The cost of the calendars is set at $20 each. Funds raised will benefit the organization’s operations. There are about 60 calendars still available for purchase in the fundraiser.

For another initiative, the Battlefords Humane Society is selling masks, many with pet-inspired designs, at $10 each for an organization fundraiser.

“We still have lots of those left,” Spark said. “Both the calendar and mask fundraisers have been quite popular.”

As far as shelter numbers are concerned, the Humane Society currently has about 75 animals available for adoption, comprised of 30 dogs and 45 cats.

Spark said she was pleased to see people did not turn in any unwanted pets after the holidays received as Christmas presents, which is a concern some years.
