The City of Melfort’s crokicurl rink at Memorial Garden is now open to the public.

The winter game that combines curling and crokinole is set-up for the third year and continues to be well used in the community.

It was completed a little later than usual but better late than never, according to Recreation Programmer Shannon Marshall.

“It is a great activity for the entire family to participate in,” Marshall said. “We continue to improve and each year we see more people out there. I think there will be great intake this year again because anyone can play and it is outdoors.”

More and more families look to get active and keep occupied with the current restrictions in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

There is a bonfire pit at Memorial Gardens for those using the crokicurl rink as well to keep warm and extend time outside.

There are also four outdoor rinks (ODR) in the city including a new surface this year.

“The most recent addition is located at Windsor Pond,” Marshall said. “It is a really fun, big rink surface about 80 x 200 so quite large.”

The Dale Frier Memorial Arena near Melfort and Unit Comprehensive Collegiate (MUCC) is open along with the pop-up rink surfaces at the Maude Burke Kinsmen park and at Spruce Haven Recreation Area. The Spruce Haven ODR also has a fire pit set up as well.

There is no shortage of other activities around the city this year with cross country ski trails open, toboggan hills at Rotary and MUCC, and the new urban polling program has begun.

“If anyone has heard of Nordic walking, these are polls that are good for stability and added fitness while walking,” Marshall said.

The urban polls can be signed out at Melfort.ca or by calling 306-752-7200 or 306-752-4177.

Early next week there will be cross country ski sets available as well as snowshoes coming through the Wild Life Federation.

A new puzzle walk at Spruce Haven will include 10 puzzles. According to Marshall it is best done in the dark as you have to find reflective markers on the trees and a puzzle is on the other side.

On Jan. 23, there will also be a snow sculpture clinic facilitated by the Northern Lights Woodcarvers.

“We had great snow sculptures around the community over the holiday season and our woodcarvers decided to host a clinic,” Marshall said.

Registration is open for four teams of two people free of charge. The clinic is weather pending.

“It is for any experience level so if you are artistic that’s great, and if you’re not it will still work for them and is a great activity,” Marshall said. “Get out and get carving.”

All activities and information is also listed on the City of Melfort Facebook page.

“We just want people to get out and explore more this winter in Melfort,” she said.
