Local library offers social outlet for community

The North Battleford Public Library is doing what it can to offer a social connection for residents amidst the ongoing pandemic.

Since reopening its doors in mid-September, the library has seen its numbers continue to increase, with a few more people each month coming in to use the traditional services, as well as take part in a range of activities offered.

From online storytime for children, to socially-distanced quiz nights, and live-streamed author talks; head librarian, Donna Thiessen said it’s all about giving residents an opportunity to come together socially in a safe and positive way.

“I think a bit part of it is just offering the connection,” Thiessen said. “We have several of these [events] and I think it’s really good just to give people the chance to interact. We’re really doing what we can to provide a safe service, and we’re being very careful about that.”

And the community appears to have taken note. In late November the library hosted a live-streamed author talk, broadcast on Facebook Live, which to date has featured over 1,400 views.

Thiessen said they hope to continue to host more book talk events moving forward, as well as other more hands-on things, such as online escape room activities and the virtual ‘Can Learn Library’ program.

The latter features an opportunity for people to learn a new skill, such as a unique craft or cooking recipe, with new videos posted each week on the library’s Facebook page.

Thiessen said whether people are taking part in the activities offered, or simply dropping in to borrow a book or movie, the library is happy to be able to provide a social outlet for residents during this continued unprecedented time.

“I think it’s kind of essential,” she said. “For a lot of people, we’re restricted on who we can visit with and who we can spend time with, and sometimes Zoom calls and the telephone just aren’t quite enough. I think we’ve done our best to make this a safe and welcome place for people, so when they come in they can visit a little bit and I think that’s important and valuable for many.”
