North Stars Richey commits to Marian University

It has been a whirlwind of a last year for 20-year-old Mason Richey.

From playing senior men’s hockey last fall near his hometown in Terrance, B.C., to moving to Saskatchewan to join the North Stars this fall; little did he know his journey was only just getting started.

Richey announced this week he has committed to Marian University in Wisconsin, to play NCAA Division III hockey this semester. He said he could not be happier to continue to play the game he loves at the post-secondary level, with a school and athletics program like the Marian U Sabres.

“Obviously the program kind of speaks for itself and the hockey’s excellent in one of the toughest divisions,” Richey said. “The school part is obviously a major piece of it as well, and with what they had to offer and the facilities they have available, it made it a pretty easy choice.”

The move came about pretty quickly for Richey, who began classes this week just days after receiving a call from head coach of the Sabres, Zach Gaynor, to see if he would be interested in coming out to join the program.

While his stop in the Battlefords may have only lasted three games due to the postponement of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League season, Richey said he could not be more grateful to the community and team for their welcoming hospitality and support.

“I am just so thankful for the coaching staff, my billets, my teammates and everybody in the Battlefords,” he said. “From day one of talking to [North Stars coach] Brayden [Klimosko] and [Head scout] Wylie [Riendeau], and through the time that I was there, I couldn’t have asked for a better experience.”

Marian University is located in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. The Sabres hockey team is scheduled to begin their season Jan. 29, at home versus Concordia Wisconsin.
