Battlefords Gymnastics Club to host day camp Friday

The Battlefords Gymnastics Club is offering a Pro-D Day Camp Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The camp is open to school-aged kids, with ages five to eight or nine.

Office administrator, Natalie Elliot, said the camp offers a great opportunity for kids to try gymnastics in a beginner-friendly and encouraging environment, with other activities also on the agenda throughout the day.

“We kind of split the day up, so when they first get here they will play an ice breaker or welcome game, but then the kids get to learn a lot of gymnastics, they get to play games, they do a craft, and they bring a lunch and two snacks with them as well,” she said.

Elliot added that programing is very flexible and can be adapted for each child on an individual basis, regardless of their skill level or prior experience in gymnastics or athletics.

“The gymnastics are all age-appropriate and coached by a certified coach,” she said. “Kids will get to learn bars and floor and beams, and some of the older kids will learn how to do a proper cartwheel or proper handstand too. Our coach is very good at modifying her classes.”

Due to the ongoing pandemic, the gymnastics club made a few changes to its day camp programing from prior years, including the separation of all groups attending, through some recent temporary renovations.

The club has installed vapor barrier plastic barriers throughout the gym, to reduce air exchange and class interactions, keeping classes completely separate, and eliminating large group activities.

Elliot said despite a few changes here or there, club members are excited to offer the camp again this year, adding it’s important for children to be able to get active and have some enjoyable social interaction with other kids around their age.

“It gives kids the chance to get out and get active and meet some new friends, or hang out with those they may go to school with” she said. “We have kids from all schools that come, including families from Battleford and schools all over North Battleford that all come.”

Elliot said, so long as the provincial guidelines continue to allow it, in addition to this Friday’s camp the club intends to hold Monday to Friday day camps over the February break and over Easter, as well as summer camps, which will be offered later in the year.
