Battlefords Chamber of Commerce planning online luncheon ceremony to induct new chair for 2021

The Battlefords Chamber of Commerce is getting ready to hold its 115th Annual Chair’s Luncheon and Annual General Meeting next month.

The event will be held Tuesday, Feb. 9, from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Usually the induction event in particular is an evening dinner ceremony, but it was moved online this year due to the province’s COVID-19 restrictions in place for gathering.

“Normally, we have two events – the banquet for the induction and then an annual meeting at a luncheon event around the same time,” Chief Operating Officer Linda Machniak said. “[This year] we’re hoping to just have one event, and have them coincide.”

During the ceremony, Melanie Roberts, director of programs with North West College, will be inducted as the new 2021 chair for the Battlefords Chamber of Commerce.

“We’ll of course toast Harris Sutherland, the chair in 2020,” Machniak said. “Then, Melanie will be inducted to take on her new role.

“It’s always exciting,” Machniak added. “This transition of leadership is always an important part of the tradition of the chamber.”

The guest speaker this year is Meadow Lake MLA Jeremy Harrison, Saskatchewan Minister of Trade and Export Development, and Minister of Immigration and Career Training.

“There is a lot of business engagement he has in his portfolio…,” Machniak said. “We thought certainly his message to the members would be business focused.”

Members are asked to register with the chamber in advance if they plan to attend.

They will also have an opportunity to pre-order their lunches through the chamber if they wish, which will be delivered to their businesses in time for the start of the virtual event.
