Snow Angels making a difference for neighbours in community

The City of North Battleford is celebrating those making a difference in their community through the act of shovelling snow.

The Snow Angels program is a purely volunteer-based initiative in which the city has encouraged willing and healthy residents to assist their neighbours with snow removal.

Since first being implemented during the winter of 2013, North Battleford has seen a growing number of residents get involved, offering their time to clear snow from sidewalks, walkways, and porch steps for fellow neighbours and community members.

Those helped are in-turn asked to relay the good deed to the city to help spread the positive word with the ‘snow angel.’ They are then also entered to potentially win a reward for their community service.

Last year the city received 74 snow angel nominations throughout the winter season. This year they are already at 51, just days into the month of February.

Communications administrator with the city, Dustin MacDonald said while the community may not have experienced a ton of consistent snowfall through the winter to this point, there have been a few heavy snow dumps, which have brought about many snow angels from around the community.

“It’s been really great to see because we’ve had a range of neighbourhoods getting involved and a wide range of snow angels,” he said. “We’ve had a lot of youth nominees this year, and even some older residents getting up and helping out their neighbours as well, so it’s really been all over the map.”

MacDonald said what makes the initiative truly special is the way it highlights how just a simple act of shovelling can brighten someone’s day.

“It’s all about the residents doing their part to help each other out, and then sharing their appreciation for the help they received, so it’s always great to hear,” MacDonald said. “It’s rewarding to hear about all these kind efforts these snow angels are doing, and how appreciative the recipients are.”
