Former Humboldt mayor and retired school principal Malcolm Eaton received the Scoop Lewry Award during the 2021 Municipalities of Saskatchewan convention this past week.

The award celebrates excellent service in municipal government or administration and Eaton said he is honoured by the award.

“I certainly appreciate the recognition for the work that I have been able to do and the things we were able to accomplish at the local level in the community of Humboldt,” Eaton told northeastNOW.

Eaton was elected to Humboldt city council in 2003 and served as mayor from 2006-2016.

“There were some exciting times,” Eaton explained. “I think that excitement is continuing in Humboldt today. I still see energy and enthusiasm to make our community a better place.”

Eaton was also the principal of St. Dominic School and St. Augustine School in Humboldt.

Eaton currently teaches municipal governance courses through the Municipalities of Saskatchewan’s online platform.

“It’s allowed me to keep in touch with what’s going on in municipalities across the province,” Eaton said. “I’ve learned a lot about different kinds of planning processes that municipalities could be engaging in. I’ve really enjoyed that.”

The award is named for Louis Harrington “Scoop” Lewry, mayor of Moose Jaw from 1950-1956 and Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA) president from 1956-57.

The Scoop Lewry Award was first presented in 1975 and the winner is chosen by the annual convention planning committee and approved by the Municipalities of Saskatchewan Board of Directors.

The Municipalities of Saskatchewan convention finished Wednesday and was held virtually.
