Wintertainment activities continue with skating and crafts Wednesday

Day three of Wintertainment took place Wednesday in North Battleford, giving residents the opportunity to get out in the community, and take part in the city’s planned events.

Free public skating was offered at the Don Ross Arena from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., while a finger puppet craft session was held at the Don Ross Community Centre from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. and then again from 2 to 3 p.m.

Robin Davis and his family were among those taking part in the free skate. Joined by his three children, he said they were very much looking forward to taking to the ice.

“[This is our] first day public skating, taking the kids out on February break, so hopefully they have some fun,” he said with a smile.

Robin’s daughter Claire added the open ice sheet looked to be great fun, as the family arrived at a time in the early afternoon, when the ice was all but left untouched. “I’m just glad that we have time to actually go, and it’s fun to have it all to ourselves, too,” she said.

Meanwhile, next door in the craft room of the Don Ross Community Centre, the Kloeble family were taking in the day’s puppet-making event, crafting a range of finger puppets, including foxes, rabbits, lizards and more.

Ivy Kloeble, who spoke to battlefordsNOW while crafting a white and purple mouse puppet, said it was a fun way to spend the day together.

“The staff are friendly and the craft isn’t too difficult, and I feel like it’s really age appropriate [for all],” Kloeble said. “It’s been good with the rest of my family here as well, making various animals too.”

The snow sculpture crafting in front of the Allen Sapp Gallery was the only other item on the agenda for Wednesday, but to allow for yesterday’s work to settle properly, further progress on the snow carving has been bumped to Thursday at the earliest.

Thursday’s activities will be highlighted by a toboggan hill contest, which encourages residents to create their own homemade toboggan and race with others; and an outdoor glow skate, where participants are asked to dress up in neon outfits for an evening skate at Connaught School’s outdoor rink.

There will also be an animal sun-catchers’ craft at the Don Ross Community Centre, and free public skating. For more information on Thursday’s events and times, visit their website.
