Sharks standout Glynn commits to Liberty University

For the past four years, defenceman Madison Glynn has been a staple on the blue line for the Battlefords AAA Sharks.

This week it was announced she has committed to Liberty University, an ACHA Division I women’s hockey program, located in Lynchburg, Virginia, for the fall of 2021.

It is an opportunity the Saskatoon product is very much looking forward to, Glynn said. Following a couple months of interactions with the school and learning about the program, it became clear to her Liberty just made sense as the right fit.

“The opportunities I would get there and the playing time, along with the people and education side of things just seems to fit the kind of environment I want to be a part of,” she said.

Glynn originally joined the Sharks as an under-ager for U18 AAA, at just 15 years of age, during the 2017-18 season. Showing consistent progress through her first two years; five points in her first and four points in the second, she then broke out to a new level last season, during the 2019-20 campaign.

In just her 17-year-old season, she put up seven goals and 13 points from the backend to finish second on the team in each category. However, while her offensive play jumped, her reputation as a solid defender remained as she also took home the team awards for Top Defensive Player and Most Dedicated at the end of the season.

That balance is something Glynn prides herself in; and hopes to continue to prove at the next level, as someone who can provide offensive spark from the backend, in addition to her defensive responsibilities.

“I would describe myself as an offensive defenceman that can be a threat in the offensive zone and make plays and score goals, but I can definitely protect our own zone and be defensive when I need too,” she said.

Head coach of the Sharks, Ricci Girolami said he and the team are proud of Glynn for taking the next step to the post-secondary ranks. He said he has full confidence she will be a difference-maker once again at the next level, before long.

“Madison deserves to play at the next level and it’s going to be a good fit for [Liberty] and for her,” he said. “She’s a very strong player who’s got the size, the shot and she really knows the game. We’re going to miss her next year, because she is a good player and a strong leader on the team. But she has all the tools to go to the next level.”
